What is NemaStudio.ai?
Most biology is out of sight. However, the nematode C. elegans has made it possible to observe human-relevant biology in great detail. This visual biology is captured using a wide range of imaging modalities and phenotypes with some datasets exceeding tens of thousands of images per experiment.
NemaStudio.ai addresses the many challenges of extracting phenotypic data at scale from image collections using an AI-first and cloud-first approach. We are excited to launch this new software-as-a-service platform to accelerate C. elegans research, and unleash a new era of data-driven biological insights and discoveries.

Why should I use web-based visual AI models?There are a number of reasons why visual AI models are preferred compared to image processing softwares that many labs have used as a workhorse. Visual AI models are (i) automated and efficient (ii) consistent and accurate in scoring phenotypes (iii) scalable to process millions of images (iv) adaptive since they can be retrained and fine-tuned to perform specific tasks.

How often are your visual AI models updated, and can I request specific features?Our visual AI models are updated almost every month with new features. If you have a specific feature in mind, we are open to discussing your needs and exploring how we can assist.

Is there a limit to the number of videos or images I can process?The number of videos and images you can process depends on your subscription tier. We are currently finalizing the subscription tiers for our customers. If you have a good sense of how much volume of images you would like to process on a monthly or annual basis, please contact us and let us know. You can also check back later or sign up below to receive email notifications when our subscription tiers are released.

Do you offer a free trial for NemaStudio.ai?Yes, we offer a free trial period for prospective customers to test NemaStudio.ai with their own images and videos. Please contact us, and we will be happy to set you up for a trial of our software.

How can your web-based visual AI software, NemaStudio.ai be used for phenotypic studies?The C. elegans community conducts phenotypic studies by acquiring diverse image collections of worms, and their cellular/sub-cellular features. NemaStudio.ai is designed to eliminate bottlenecks associated with manual scoring as well as desktop image processing softwares that require user expertise and intervention to specify settings. In addition, NemaStudio.ai is continuously replenished with new visual AI models as they become validated.

On which devices can I use Nemastudio.ai software?Since NemaStudio.ai is web-based, you can use it on any device with internet access and a modern web browser. For the best user experience, we recommend using a computer or a tablet to access Nemastudio.ai.

Can I process both videos and images with NemaStudio.ai?Yes, our software supports processing both videos and images. Currently, we are exploring the breadth of image/video formats that NemaStudio.ai can tackle. Stay tuned for more updates or reach out to us if you have a specific format in mind.

How do you validate your visual AI models?Validation is the key to AI model performance and trust. We use a three-step process to ensure that our visual AI models are well validated. First we train our model using few thousand images. Second, we subject it to rigorous testing by developing new image data sets with positive controls or mutants to ensure that the model results translate well to expected trends in experiments. Third, we continuously update the model as new image data sets are being generated. Finally, the optionality of reviewing the AI-scored images in NemaStudio.ai is provided for users to confirm or censor phenotypic images as needed.

My lab has already generated many images on a C. elegans phenotype. Can NemaStudio.ai be used to develop a custom visual AI model?Yes, we love working with images containing unique and new C. elegans phenotypes. Please contact us, and we will be happy to set up a call to discuss a potential collaborative project.

What is the accuracy of your visual AI models?The accuracy and performance of our AI models depends on the stage of validation and deployment. Some of the models have achieved 95% accuracy while others are lower. We do not expect our AI models to reach near 100% accuracy, and also there will be a training bias. It is important that our AI models cut down the manual and subjective effort of phenotypic scoring and have a human in the data loop to review results and take any necessary corrective measures.

Is NemaStudio.ai user-friendly and suitable for different types of users?Yes, we designed this platform to be user-friendly, so anyone with basic computer skills can use it with minimal training. It is suitable for a wide range of users, from graduate students to postdocs to even undergraduate researchers.
